How long does a car battery last?

Three to five years is the usual answer in South African conditions. What moves it within that range is mostly heat, vibration and how the car is used.

Why heat matters more than cold

Cold gets the blame because that is when a weak battery finally fails — the engine is stiffer and the battery is at its least capable on the same morning. But the damage was done in summer. High under-bonnet temperatures accelerate the chemistry that degrades the plates, and the battery simply runs out of reserve on the first cold start.

What shortens it

Repeated deep discharges, a loose hold-down letting the battery vibrate, a charging system running high or low, and long periods standing unused. Each of those takes months off.

Fitting the wrong type shortens it too. A car built for a stop-start battery, given an ordinary one, will cycle it far harder than it was designed for.

How to tell yours is near the end

Slower cranking than it used to have, especially first thing. Headlights that visibly dim at idle. Needing a jump more than once. And age alone — if it is over four years old and you rely on the car, have it tested before it strands you. The test is free.
