How to jump start a car safely

The order matters. Done wrong, you can damage electronics on both cars or produce a spark directly over a battery.

The order

Both engines off. Red lead to the positive terminal of the flat battery, then the other red end to the positive of the good battery. Black lead to the negative of the good battery, then the other black end to a bare metal earth point on the flat car's engine block — not to its negative terminal.

That last step is the one people skip. A battery vents hydrogen, and the final connection is the one that sparks. You want that spark away from the battery.

Then

Start the good car and let it run for a minute or two. Start the flat car. Remove the leads in exactly the reverse order. Keep the flat car running and drive it for a decent stretch, not five minutes.

What a successful jump does not tell you

It does not tell you the battery is fine. It tells you there was enough left to accept a boost. A battery that needs a jump twice is a battery that needs testing, and the test is free.

Find your battery

Which NOVAX® fits your car?

Read the code off the top or side of your current battery — three digits, sometimes with letters after them, like 628 or 646.

NOVAX® is fitted and warranted through Global Batteries Xpress and authorised resellers. Find your nearest outlet — they confirm the size against the car before anything is fitted.

Where to go

NOVAX® is tested, fitted and warranted at Global Batteries Xpress outlets and at resellers we have appointed in writing. The test is free whether you buy anything or not.
