Read the code off the battery you already have
South African batteries carry a size code printed on the top or the side — three digits, sometimes with letters after them, like 628, 646 or 652. That code fixes the case size, the terminal positions and the hold-down.
It is the most reliable answer there is, because it describes the battery that physically fits the tray in your car right now.
Look the vehicle up
If the battery is gone, unreadable, or you are buying for a car you are not standing next to, use the vehicle lookup on this page. Pick the make, the model and the variant and it will give you the size commonly fitted.
Treat it as a shortlist, not a final answer. We confirm against the car before anything is fitted, because a variant can change mid-model-year and the tray is what decides.
Why the physical size matters as much as the rating
A battery that is electrically adequate but physically wrong is still wrong. If the terminals are on the opposite side the cables will not reach, and if the case is taller than the tray the bonnet or the hold-down will not close on it. Length, width, height and terminal layout all have to match.
